Default Folder X 4.3.7 is available!

April 22nd, 2010

Version 4.3.7 of Default Folder X is now available. It brings Drag and Drop support to the preference pane for adding favorite and default folders, adds nice little shortcuts to make working with your preferences easier, includes two new AppleScript commands and fixes a number of bugs and compatibility problems.

Things run more smoothly in general, so I recommend this update for everyone. In particular, make sure to download this version if you use Microsoft Word, FileMaker Pro, PyMOL (yeah, I’d never heard of it either), or if you’ve had instances in which Default Folder X’s toolbar buttons stop responding.

More information and download links are available on the Default Folder X What’s New page.

Renaming Favorites in Default Folder X

April 12th, 2010

Default Folder X lets you mark folders as favorites so you can get to them quickly.  Unfortunately, it displays those folders in its menus using their names – if you’ve got two identically named folders named “Images,” for instance, they both show up in Default Folder X’s menus as “Images” and it’s hard to tell them apart.

Because of this, I’ve gotten a few requests for the ability to change the names of Favorites without changing the name of the actual folders that they point to.  This feature is on my To-Do list, but in the meantime here’s a workaround to do it with the current version of Default Folder X:

  1. Open Default Folder X in System Preferences.
  2. Click on the Settings button.
  3. Click on the Advanced tab and turn on “Create aliases for Recent Folders and Favorites in your Library folder”.
  4. In the Finder, navigate to this folder: HOME/Library/Favorites.  Locate the aliases of the folders you want to rename.
  5. Rename the alias files using the Finder.  Default Folder X will then read those names and substitute them for the original folder names in its menus.

Getting to Recent Folders with the Keyboard in DFX

March 29th, 2010

Many people are familiar with the Option-down-arrow keyboard shortcut in Default Folder X. When you’re using an Open or Save dialog, it takes you straight to the last folder you used. (If you haven’t been using this, try it – it saves a TON of time).

What most people don’t know is that there’s a hidden setting in your Default Folder X preferences that will let you use the same keyboard combination in the Finder. Press Option-down-arrow and the most recent folder in your DFX Recent Folders menu will open up in a new window.

To enable this, open System Preferences and select Default Folder X. Hold down the Option key while you press the “Settings…” button and you’ll get this sheet of options:

Turn on the checkbox marked “HotkeysForRecentFolders” and click OK.  That’s all there is to it.

If you’re curious about all of the other “secret settings”, have a look at this blog post.

Accessing Your Recent and Favorite Folders in LaunchBar

March 26th, 2010

LaunchBar is a great ‘mouse-free’ utility for instantly getting to files, folders, URLs, music, addresses, and just about anything else on your Mac.  Hit command-spacebar and start typing the first few letters of whatever you want – LaunchBar lists the choices that match and you just hit the return key to open or go to that item.  I use it all the time and recommend it to everyone I know.

There’s a really handy way of including your recent and favorite folders from Default Folder X in LaunchBar’s index. After doing this, you can instantly access those folders from the keyboard using LaunchBar.

To make Default Folder X favorites and recent folders available in LaunchBar do the following:

  1. In your Default Folder X preferences, click on the Advanced tab and turn on “Create aliases of Recent Folders and Favorites in your Library folder”.
  2. In LaunchBar, choose Show Index from the Index menu.  Click on the “Folder+” button in the toolbar to add a folder.
  3. Select the HOME/Library/Favorites/ folder.
  4. Once the folder is added, click on the Options tab for that folder and set Search Scope to “Search 1 Subfolder Level” and Search for “Folders”.
  5. Click on the Schedule tab and turn on the “Update automatically” checkbox.
  6. Repeat steps 2-5 for the folder HOME/Library/Recent Folders/
  7. Once you tell LaunchBar to reindex, you’ll have access to all of your Default Folder X favorite and recent folders.

Thanks to Gary Schelling for asking about this and jogging my brain 🙂

Default Folder X 4.3.6 Released!

March 5th, 2010

Default Folder X 4.3.6 is finally available, delivering a whole bunch of improvements and fixes.  And yes, it finally uses Sparkle to check for updates 🙂

If you use Default Folder X, make sure you update to 4.3.6 – not only does it address bugs in some of its own features, but it also compensates for a lot of the quirks and not-quite-right things in Snow Leopard.

For a full listing of changes and links to download it (in various languages), check the What’s New page. If you just want to grab the update right away, use this link:

Indie+Relief nets $143,872 for Haiti

January 25th, 2010

In case you haven’t already seen the news at the Indie+Relief site or on Twitter, the Indie+Relief fundraiser pulled in more than $143,000 for earthquake relief in Haiti – that’s more than any of us ever anticipated! You can read the details at Justin Williams’ blog.

Thanks to everyone who bought software or participated last Wednesday – you’re all fantastic!  It’s really heartening to see the community come together when the need arises. A lot of people really stepped up to contribute.  THANKS!

Indie+Relief: Help Haiti AND Get Great Software

January 20th, 2010

The earthquake in Haiti has nearly destroyed what was already a fragile country. Please join us in assisting in the relief effort.

On Wednesday, January 20 St. Clair Software and 100+ other developers are donating all sales to help provide medical care and supplies for Haitian earthquake victims. Please visit the Indie+Relief web site and purchase any products you need, think you might need or have even considered buying. All revenue will be donated to charities that benefit Haitian earthquake relief.

Even if you don’t purchase anything, donate to the charity of your choice.  Skip that latte and send water to people that desperately need it.  Skip that dessert and provide food or medicine. Or keep your lifestyle exactly the same and just donate a few dollars – it all adds up.  If you’re unsure which charity to give to, visit Charity Navigator, which breaks down the benefits (and costs incurred) for most major charitable organizations.

Default Folder X 4.3.5 – Hot on the heels of 4.3.4

December 2nd, 2009

Sigh – and I thought we had everything completely tested this time…

You can get the new release of Default Folder X from the What’s New page, or just download it using this link:

http://www.stclairsoft.com/cgi-bin/dl.cgi?DX

Version 4.3.5 of Default Folder X remedies two things:

  1. In Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, and other Carbon applications, Default Folder X’s windows and controls could be left on-screen after a Save dialog went away.  This will no longer happen in 4.3.5.
  2. The latest version of OpenMeta uses a different metadata keyword for storing tags in the extended attributes of files (this was not my choice). Because of this, it needs to ‘upgrade’ any tags that you’ve already attached to your files – it searches for them with Spotlight and makes copies of them under the new names. This is necessary if you want Default Folder X (and other OpenMeta-based tagging tools) to continue reading them, but can bog down your machine if you have lots of tagged files.

Default Folder X will normally do this upgrade automatically. It does, however, take time and resources, so DFX now contains a hidden switch that lets you turn off this upgrade process until you’re ready for it to run.  To get to it, option-click on the Settings button in the DFX preference pane.  You’ll get this window:

Just turn on that “DisableOpenMetaUpgrade” checkbox at the bottom.  Remember that you DO need to run the OpenMeta upgrade eventually or you’ll find that old tags won’t show up when you look at them with Default Folder X (though they’re still there).

The one situation where you might want to leave OpenMeta upgrading disabled is if you’re using MailTags to tag your email messages and won’t need to access those tags with DFX or any other OpenMeta tagging tool.

Sorry for providing another update so quickly after the last, but it was important to get these changes out, especially #1.  We don’t want you to have problems with Save dialogs!
