Default Folder X 4.6.14 : Fixes for a bunch of issues, big and small

February 25th, 2015

I’m happy to announce that Default Folder X version 4.6.14 is available today – it offers a number of bug fixes and improvements.

Most importantly, it fixes crashes that occurred for some users of ArchiCAD, Mathematica and Cubase 8 (as well as other audio apps that use VST plugins). The problem isn’t widespread and I was never able to determine exactly what circumstances trigger it, but found a way to work around it thanks to very dedicated Default Folder X users Frank Heller and Dave Smith. Thanks guys!

The other fix I’m personally happy about is squashing a bug that caused the Rebound feature to fail to select a file every now and then. It’d work fine almost all the time, but the inconsistency was maddening when it failed.

Other improvements are UI tweaks, including the option to resize file and folder icons as you resize a file dialog, a better error message when you’ve got Little Snitch blocking Default Folder X from checking your registration code, a fix for a very rare crash (thanks Sergey Kritskiy), and more reliable tagging in the face of other apps that try to delete tags after Default Folder X adds them.

There’s a full list of changes on the Default Folder X Release Page, along with links to download the new version in English, German, French, Danish and Japanese.

HistoryHound 1.9.11 fully supports Safari 8

January 9th, 2015

Version 1.9.11 of HistoryHound is now available, providing full support for indexing Safari 8 history and cache files. It also allows you to add a single URL to your search index in HistoryHound’s search preferences, and can be used as an upgrade to copies of HistoryHound purchased on the Mac App Store.

If you purchased HistoryHound from the Mac App Store, just make sure to run version 1.9.11 once after you download it BEFORE you get rid of the copy you bought from the App Store. This will allow the new version of HistoryHound to copy your license from the version you bought from Apple.

Go to the HistoryHound Release page for full details and download links.

Default Folder X 4.6.13 update fixes a few issues

January 7th, 2015

I just posted an update to Default Folder X that corrects a few issues that have come up:

  • Fixed a bug in which Default Folder X’s Get Info dialog would fail to prompt you for a file when invoked from the menubar while there was no file dialog active.
  • On Mac OS 10.8.5, Default Folder X could cause Save sheets to get progressively smaller. This has been fixed.
  • Corrected a compatibility issue with Glyphs for Mac.

If you’re running Mac OS 10.8.5 you should definitely install the update immediately. Or if you use the Glyphs font editing app or rely on Default Folder X’s Get Info feature, grab the update now. Otherwise, it’s not crucial that you rush to get the new version.

Happy New Year!

Default Folder X Users: Please stop using MacCleanse and MacKeeper

January 6th, 2015

The most recent versions of MacCleanse 4 and MacKeeper delete Default Folder X’s preference files, even when Default Folder X is still installed on your Mac. Among other things, this will delete your Default Folder X license information and revert it to running in demo mode. To avoid this problem, please stop using MacCleanse and MacKeeper until their developers have fixed these bugs. I’ve notified them about the problem.

Thanks! – Jon

Default Folder X 4.6.12 fixes ever-growing Save dialogs, recent folder tracking and more

December 12th, 2014

Here’s the latest release of Default Folder X. It fixes the “Attack of the 50-foot Save Sheet” bug in Yosemite, makes the initial folder in Mail and NetNewsWire file dialogs work sanely,  and addresses some problems in Default Folder X itself. It should track your recent folders better, its contextual menu works in column view in Yosemite, and the menubar menu now has all the more-frequently-used stuff at the top, where it’s easier to get to.

I’m still working on a couple of additional issues in Yosemite (though they occur very infrequently), so the website isn’t going to get its makeover until after the holidays (sigh). Yosemite’s a bit of a frustrating beast.

And one more thing… If you find that Default Folder X keeps asking you to enter your registration code every few days, stop using MacKeeper. Their latest release mistakenly deletes Default Folder X’s preference files. I’ve already notified them of the problem, but it’d probably get fixed a little faster if you contacted them too (use the phone number at the bottom of the linked page).

A list of changes and download links are on the Default Folder X Release page.

Default Folder X beta fixes the “Attack of the 50-foot Save Sheet”

December 5th, 2014

Jason Snell recently publicized an amusing bug in Yosemite that he called the “Attack of the 50-foot Save Sheet.” It results in Save As dialogs in some applications growing taller and taller until they run off the bottom of the screen – at which point you can no longer reach the OK and Cancel buttons. And then it might not be so amusing anymore.

I submitted a bug report detailing the problem to Apple two months ago, but they haven’t addressed it in a system update yet. Since Default Folder X knows a thing or two about file dialogs, I figured I’d just take care of it in the interim, so there’s now a beta version of Default Folder X that fixes it, along with a few other issues (aka bugs) in the current release of Default Folder X.

Go to the Default Folder X Beta Testing page for details and a download link. And please, send feedback about how it’s working to defaultfolder@stclairsoft.com – that’s the whole point of putting out a pre-release version!

Thanks!

– Jon

Jettison 1.4.3 addresses crash when waking from sleep

November 20th, 2014

Version 1.4.3 of Jettison is now available, fixing several bugs. This includes a change to prevent Jettison from quitting unexpectedly when your Mac wakes from sleep. We recommend that anyone using Jettison update to the new version.

Please note that if you purchased Jettison from the Mac App Store, you must run Jettison once from the download image BEFORE you replace your old version in the Applications folder. This will copy your Mac App Store license so that Jettison doesn’t pester you to purchase it again.

Details and download links are on the Jettison Release Page!

Default Folder X 4.6.11 delivers 2 important bug fixes

October 28th, 2014

Default Folder X 4.6.11 is available now, bringing you a couple of important fixes when running on Yosemite. The first is a bug fix for a crash that occurs under some circumstances in Carbon applications such as Adobe Photoshop and Microsoft Word. The second is a more minor problem with BusyCal and BusyContacts, where Default Folder X would prevent one of the initial setup dialogs from defaulting to the proper folder.

You can grab the new version from http://www.stclairsoft.com/DefaultFolderX/index.html. This update is free for anyone who’s purchased a license for Default Folder X version 4.

Jettison 1.4.2 detects SD cards in Yosemite and improves ejecting and remounting of drives.

October 22nd, 2014

An update for Jettison is available, fixing a problem with detecting SD cards when running in Yosemite, and also making the ejecting and remounting of all drive types more reliable (and often faster). You can get a copy from the Jettison page – the update is free if you’ve purchased a license from us or from the Mac App Store.

App Store customers: Please remember to run your new copy of Jettison immediately after downloading it, BEFORE you delete or replace the version you bought from the Mac App Store. This will ensure that Jettison doesn’t ask you to pay for it again.
